During the remainder of the Winter of 1944-5 we continued to carry out small-scale raids and patrols amongst the islands of the Scheldt, tactically preventing any German counter-attacks from the north-west against Antwerp. Until March, 1945 we were stationed on North Beveland and patrolled onto the next island. Then we moved on to the mainland, with the end of hostilities finding us near Bergen-op-Zoom.

June, 1945 we moved into Germany to Recklinghausen in the Ruhr, guarding a prison camp. An interrogation team was set up to deal with the two P.O.W. Camps, containing around 250,000 prisoners of different ranks. The interrogation began after they were put into groups seeking out wanted men for War Crime Trials.

Depressing business…some of them had been guards in concentration camps, scarcely men at all really; others were doctors carrying out so-called ‘experiments in the cause of science‘ and as for the S.S. they were still arrogant and thoroughly contemptuous, bastards!

Many of those Germans…George, the average soldiers, were broken bits of humanity in a terrible state with Tuberculosis and Dysentery!

I was over the moon to be returning to England in March, 1946. But, in all honesty, bloody sick that we were officially disbanded…we‘d fought together, ate and slept together…we were a brotherhood! We felt choked as we said our ‘goodbyes‘…must have been the same for you, George?

I wasn’t looking forward to going back to my original Army Unit, I‘d left years before…who would I know?”

As Dad was still talking about coming home to us, my head suddenly bashed against the door as I fell off to sleep! Jumping in shock and horror at getting caught, decided to creep back to bed. Billy had long been asleep, lying on the floor. I shook him gently, just enough to keep him quiet…we stumbled up the stairs, flopping into bed.
